Bio Bits



Smith was a setter at North Carolina-Asheville, where she was an Academic All-America as a senior. She was all-conference each of her four years and twice was an all-region selection.  When she graduated she was the all-time assists leader (5,904) at her school, for the conference, and in the region.  Her 1996 season total of 1,852 assists ranks ninth all-time in NCAA Division I.

Following graduation she played professional volleyball before getting into coaching.  She was an assistant coach at the University of Central Missouri, where she worked under the winningest coach in NCAA Division II history (Peggy Martin). She is head women's volleyball coach at Lewis University, where her husband Dan Friend is the head men's volleyball coach. They have a daughter, Rae Analyn, born in 2016.
