Bio Bits


College:  Bates played at George Mason, where he was named the 2005 EIVA Newcomer of the Year after starting every match as a freshman.  As a sophomore and senior he was selected First-Team EIVA All-East, but was injured for the majority of his junior campaign.  Bates left the program with the third most kills in history (1,143) and ranked in the top 10 in career aces, blocks and digs as well.

Personal: Bates was born in Lisbon, Portugal. His father, Carey, played football at University of Tennessee-Martin.  One sister, Hollie, played volleyball at Charleston Southern while another sister, Heather, rowed for one year at Virginia.  Following graduation he served as a volunteer assistant coach at George Mason. In 2013 he was hired as the head men's volleyball coach at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.

Indoor:  Following graduation Bates played professionally in Puerto Rico and Qatar from 2008-2012, and spent two years training with the USA National Team from 2008-2010.
